LOST MINDS | The Dr Eiras Psychiatric Hospital
Founded in the '60s to be a center of excellence in mental health, the Dr. Eiras health hospital, in Paracambi, Rio de Janeiro state, has become over the years a storehouse of patients.
Reports of mistreatment, electric shocks, hunger, torture and deaths inside the hospital that was once considered the largest asylum in Latin America led the Ministry of Health to interdict the place on June 17, 2004. Five years later, in 2009, the court ordered all patients to be transferred to other institutions and the health home closed.
On March 23, 2012, the psychiatric hospital was definitively closed two years after the court order for the activities to be closed, according to the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office (MPRJ). The last seven patients were transferred to another clinic in the same municipality.
